What we do

MARC at Mizzou is a National Institutes of Health-funded undergraduate training program designed to reduce the barriers some Mizzou undergraduates encounter in pursuing careers in biomedical research. Our programs span the entire undergraduate career with the goal of developing participating students into experienced and capable researchers through:

  1. Integrated research training in biomedical sciences that foster inclusion
  2. Training in quantitative data analysis and reproducible and responsible research, skills necessary for future success as independent researchers
  3. Robust professional development activities and multilevel mentoring networks

Pre-MARC Apprentice Program

The Pre-MARC Apprentice Program is for 1st and 2nd year students who are beginning their science journey.

Join the Pre-MARC Program!

Pre-MARC Apprentice

Overview:
  • Attend a weekly seminar designed to provide social and academic support, and exploration of careers in biomedical research.
  • Meet regularly with a MARC Fellow peer mentor — a student who has successfully navigated the curriculum and the program and can now help others’ science journey.
  • Complete research training and development programs.
  • Identify faculty for mentored research opportunities.
  • Maintain a high level of academic achievement.
  • Work in a research lab with a faculty mentor and be paid for up to 12 hours a week during the academic year. Most students will join a lab between the second semester of their first year and the first semester of their second year, subject to approval by the MARC leadership team.
  • Present research at an on-campus forum and, if selected, have additional opportunities to present research at state or national conferences.
  • Students who wish to continue working full or part-time in the summer can apply for a Pre-MARC summer internship.

MARC Fellowship

Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) fellows are funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. This is a competitive program with limited positions. MARC at Mizzou fellows receive a competitive stipend and up to 60% tuition support for the full academic year, plus a full-time immersive summer experience.
