The College of Arts and Science supports faculty taking leave for research and development projects. In conjunction with the process put forth by the Office of the Provost, these procedures must be followed to be considered for research leave in academic year 2023-2024.

Failure to follow the process below will result in no leave consideration for academic year 2023-2024 regardless of funding status (this includes Fulbright awardees and other individual awards). Late applications will not be considered.

Applications

Completed applications are due Nov. 1; they will be reviewed by the dean’s office and sent to the office of the provost no later than Jan. 15, 2023.

Leave applications that include pending applications for external and internal funding are permitted. These applications will be submitted, though are contingent upon receiving external or internal funding.

Upon leave determination, the faculty member, chair, and portfolio manager will be notified with pertinent information. The faculty member should work with the portfolio manager to complete and submit the necessary leave paperwork as soon as the leave is approved and prior to the start of the leave period. This process can be time-consuming as it requires the Dean’s Office approval as well as Provost Office approval; therefore, we ask participants to plan accordingly.

Eligibility

  • Tenured, tenure-track and full-time, ranked non-tenure-track faculty
  • Evidence of applying for external funding to support the research or development activity; if none received, then:
  • Evidence of receiving financial support for conducting this research from internal funding (e.g., Research Council)
  • Note that an applicant must have applied for external funding to be considered, and the applicant must have received either external or internal funding to be granted leave.

Checklist

  • Discuss the leave plan with your department chair, as they will need to certify that the teaching and other service needs of the department will be met during the leave.
  • Complete A&S Research Leave application, submit to muasgrants@missouri.edu by 5 p.m. Nov. 1; if pending applications were included as part of the request, please update Kate Neckermann when you receive the final determination.

Funding process

There are limited funds available to support teaching replacement costs for research and development leave; thus departments will be asked to review their own resources before asking for additional support. Salary savings generated from external funding can be requested to be used to help support teaching replacement costs on a case-by-case basis.

Residential fellowships

Salary will be reduced by the amount of the fellowship which will create salary savings. Additionally, residential fellowships will be supported by the dean’s office by providing 2/9ths summer funding to the faculty member. Any salary savings generated by the fellowship can be requested to be used to support teaching replacement costs on a case-by-case basis, the remainder of which will be retained by the dean’s office. The award documents that include the award amount, duration, and any other terms and conditions must be shared with the portfolio manager.
