Kibby Smith, a College of Arts and Science academic advisor at the University of Missouri, has been honored with the 2024 MACADA Outstanding Academic Advising Award. The Missouri Academic Advising Association (MACADA) recognized Smith for her exceptional commitment and service to students in her advising role and will present the award during its annual conference in September.

Smith’s achievement is celebrated in the category of Academic Advising, Primary Role, which acknowledges individuals whose primary responsibility is the direct provision of advising services to students. Her dedication and expertise in guiding students through their academic journeys have been acknowledged by both colleagues and students.

Since joining the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science in 2011, Smith has advised students across several majors, including International Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Peace Studies, and Environmental Studies. Smith's advisees benefit from her extensive understanding of academic policies and her ability to navigate complex requirements for multiple majors and minors.

Smith's approach to advising is noted for its blend of technical expertise and compassionate guidance. Her colleagues praise her for the way she balances knowledge with empathy, as illustrated by a nomination that noted, "Kibby’s approach to advising is holistic. She understands that students are more than their transcripts and degrees; they are people who appear in her office with a wide range of experiences, struggles, and concerns."

Smith's dedication and impact are further echoed in the heartfelt words of her students. One graduate shared, “I genuinely believe that I would not be continuing higher education if I did not meet Kibby Smith. She is an invaluable resource to this University and the students she represents, and she should be celebrated and recognized every day for the work she does.”

Prior recognition of Smith’s commendable efforts includes the MU Advising Shout Out Award and the Arts and Science ‘Advisor of the Year’ award. This new accolade from MACADA further affirms her exceptional role in academic advising.

In a reflection on her advising philosophy, Smith emphasized the importance of meaningful connections with students as she summarized her goals. “Academic advising is ultimately about connecting to students in meaningful ways... Advisors give advice and guidance, but they also encourage problem-solving and independent learning”
