The Summer Research Exposure Program (SREP) pairs first- and second-year undergraduates with faculty members to engage in mentored research and creative activities.
At the end of the summer program, students and faculty will have the option to apply for additional funding and continue their research relationship for the full academic year.
Application Timeline
- Faculty and student applications open on Feb. 1
- Faculty and student deadline to apply is March 1
- The A&S Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities committee will match mentor/mentee pairs by April 15
- Mentors will be required to attend a start-of-program cohort meeting with other mentors between the end of classes and the beginning of the program in May
- In 2024, SREP will run from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, July 28
- Mentors & students will be required to submit a brief evaluation by Aug. 31
FOR STUDENTS
Up to 15 students will be selected for SREP each summer. These students will work as research assistants alongside faculty members for up to 20 hours per week for nine weeks and will receive up to $2,700 (paid biweekly based on hours worked).
The College of Arts and Science will also fund students working on campus to participate in summer research programs through the Office of Undergraduate Research ($325 per student). These programs include:
- Professional development workshops on topics such as exploring graduate and professional school programs
- Applying for competitive fellowships
- Presenting scholarship and science communication
Positions will be primarily in-person and on campus, though some remote work may be possible.
Student Eligibility
- Be first- or second-year undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Science
- Have little to no previous research experience
- Be available to work roughly 15-20 hours per week during the 9-week summer program
Student Expectations
- Perform work as deemed necessary by faculty mentors
- Attend required summer professional development programming
- Participate in program assessment at the end of the term
- Effectively balance research work with other commitments

Students may apply without mentors identified or may indicate specific individuals with whom they wish to pair.
FOR FACULTY
SREP aims to bridge the gap between early-career students struggling to find research opportunities and faculty who are seeking students interested in such opportunities.
Faculty mentors will receive $500 in E&E for their participation. At the end of the summer program, students and faculty will have the option to apply for additional funding and continue their research relationship for the full academic year.
Students are not required to design and implement an independent project. Instead, mentees should be integrated into the faculty mentor’s scholarship and gain experience with important scholarship tasks such as:
- Literature searching
- Running participants
- Interview coding
- Sample preparation
Faculty Eligibility
- Have no existing funding to support undergraduate students
- Hold a faculty position in the College of Arts and Science
- Note: Only A&S faculty will be considered for this program.
Faculty Expectations
- Hold weekly meetings with students
- Participate in a cohort of faculty mentors
- Engage in mentorship of the undergraduate student
- Participate in end-of-program assessment of their student
