The College of Arts & Science announced today that Jared R. Rawlings, Ph.D., will begin serving as the Director of the School of Music effective July 1, 2023.
Rawlings comes to Mizzou from The University of Utah’s School of Music where he has served as the associate professor of music education and associate director. He brings expertise guiding several innovative and interdisciplinary curricular and programmatic enterprises. He has demonstrated high-level leadership in developing cross-campus initiatives and supporting faculty in scholarly and creative work. These strengths are complemented by a prolific research profile with work appearing in leading research journals and texts, particularly in the area of music teacher education.
Rawlings’ experience and innovative vision for the future will advance the University of Missouri School of Music's mission: to prepare students to make meaningful contributions in the world as performers, composers, teachers, and scholars. He replaces Dr. Julia Gaines who is stepping down after a third three-year term.
“We thank Julia for her excellent work leading the School of Music for the past nine years,” said Cooper Drury, Dean of the College of Arts & Science. “I cannot imagine a more dedicated advocate for her faculty, staff, and students.”
Gaines, who previously directed the School of Music’s percussion program for 18 years, will return to teaching percussion for one semester this fall.
“I’ve known Jared for several years through music administrative circles and I’m delighted he’ll be leading the School of Music,” said Gaines. “I look forward to working with him to facilitate a smooth transition of leadership.”
Rawlings is excited to build upon the School of Music’s long-standing tradition of excellence. “I am deeply honored to join the distinguished faculty and lead the school as we educate the next generation of performers, educators, creators, and leaders for the 21st century.”
