The University of Missouri Chess Team earned several individual and team awards during two major online collegiate chess tournaments in fall 2022.
MU graduate student Grigory Oparin recently defeated teammate Mikhail Antipov, a junior at MU, to win first place in the 2022 finals of the Collegiate Chess League (CCL) playoffs, an online chess competition. A total of six students from MU were among more than 300 total qualifiers for the CCL playoffs after the CCL’s six-week regular season concluded.
In the 2022 U.S. Online Collegiate Rapid and Blitz Championships, MU students also took home several individual and team awards.
- In the Rapid Championship, Oparin and Antipov finished second and third place, respectively, in the individual competition. MU finished second place behind Webster University in the team competition.
- In the Blitz Championship, Antipov won first place in the individual competition, earning him the title of 2022 U.S. Collegiate Blitz Champion. MU also finished first place over Webster University and University of Texas-Dallas in the team competition.
