Department Chair Soren Larsen, along with Michele Lobo (Deakin University) and Avril Maddrell (University of Reading), penned the introductory commentary for an international journal focused on social and cultural geography.

Their intro, titled “Refreshing Methods: Reflections and Provocations,” was recently published in Social & Cultural Geography, as part of a special issue on qualitative methods (available here). It was in Issue 9 of Volume 21, 2020.

For those interested in contemporary and future directions in methods in social and cultural geography, you might want to check out the special issue, which is part of the celebration of 20 years of the journal Social & Cultural Geography.

The issue was comprised of eight papers, broken down in “unsettling binaries” including animate/inanimate, life/non-life, subject/object, nature/culture, urban/rural and more. Soren’s piece dealt with “the event: performing epistemic spaces,” “feeling and doing space: the field,” “socio-technological worlds,” and “mobilities: moving with practices.”

”This was a fun commentary to write, because it gave me a chance to review developments in qualitative methods over the past 20 years, and also an opportunity to work with colleagues Michele and Avril.”
