Steve Weigenstein, an Arts and Science alum, became a finalist for the 2021 PEN/Faulkner literary award for his work, ‘Scattered Lights’. Weigenstein, who earned his MA in 1982 and PhD in 1987, both in English, is one of five finalists for The PEN/Faulkner Award. The finalist list honors the best published works of fiction. Previously, the award has gone to several American literary legends like Larry McMurry, Joyce Carol Oates, and Jonathan Franzen

Weigenstein is currently working on the fourth installment of his Daybreak series, while living out his dream in retirement “Now I feel free to work on creative writing and do it from a perspective where I feel seasoned to do it as well as I can,” he says. “And I don’t concern myself with the fact that I didn’t do it earlier. There’s still plenty of time.”
