Abby Hunt, a geography undergrad, has once again been selected to be the Jesse H. Wheeler Student Ambassador for the geography department.

“Building on her success in a fully remote environment last semester, Abby will be promoting geography classes, welcoming new majors, and helping coordinate departmental and student events, among other things,” says Department Chair Soren Larsen.

Hunt, who was an ambassador for the spring 2020 semester, says she applied again because she loves the program. “I thought it allowed me to connect with my peers, to connect with the campus over something I’m really passionate about, which is the study of geography,” she says.

The program gives her the feeling of being an integral part of the department and allows her to feel as if she is a contributing member, she adds.

“I want to help foster a sense of community even thought that looks very different this year. And I want to be a resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about geography or simply learning that it means more than just reading maps.”

Hunt says she’s working on developing some fun social-distancing geography events, as well as welcoming new majors to the department.

“We’re also working on an event for people who graduated last year to celebrate the most recent alumni,” Hunt adds.

What does she love most about her position? “I love getting to talk to people. I love being able to contribute. And I love sharing what is so special to me in this close-knit department with the rest of Mizzou.

“Being an ambassador allows you to fully have a voice in the department and you are able to help others find their voice, too.”

Hunt said if anyone has questions about the program, as well as suggestions or comments, to email her at amh8xq@mail.missouri.edu.
