Student Ambassador Leadership Program

Admission

The Arts and Science Student Ambassador Program is a leadership program in which selected team members will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills to complement their Arts and Science degree, network with the expansive alumni base, and prepare them for a variety of fields after graduation.  Students will practice these skills and represent the college in a wide variety of events, including undergraduate recruitment, alumni activities, and other college occasions.

My favorite A & S experience has been getting to meet my adviser for the first time. I remember I made an appointment with her because I was having a mid-college crisis not knowing what I was going to do with my life and when I went into her office she was so warm and calming. She was able to talk to me about my likes and hobbies and help me see the bigger picture of what I was doing with my life. The A & S advisers are amazing!

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite Arts and Science experiences have been my courses in the School of Visual Studies. Through the skilled instruction of my professors and the resources that the department provides, I have been able to explore ceramics, calligraphy, painting, fibers, and drawing. Learning new techniques, experimenting with new mediums, and developing my personal style has been both gratifying and invaluable in the development of my portfolio.

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite Mizzou A&S experience was in a class I took my very first semester here, The Judicial Process with Professor Horner. On top of some incredible guest speakers, including a Missouri Supreme Court Judge and the Dean of the Mizzou Law School, we got to apply the content we learned in class to the Supreme Court Nomination Hearings that were happening at that time. My experience in this class is very telling of my Mizzou A&S experience; classes where application learning of content is not an ideal, but a reality.

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite memory in the College of Arts and Science is from my Making Modern Europe history class: when learning about the French Revolution we were each assigned a person, like the King or a Catholic priest, and we role-played with the other characters and had a debate over what laws should be passed. It was such a fun way of learning!

One of my favorite parts about being in the College of Arts and Science has been being part of a mentorship group that is lead by the Chair of the English Department. Being able to form personal relationships with A&S faculty and students has been an incredible opportunity. I've loved how open and involved Arts and Science faculty members are and the experiences I've had with them are absolutely my favorite thing about the college!

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite Arts and Science memory is last year when I went to the A & S Career Fair. I was so nervous going into the event that I almost chickened out. However, I finally convinced myself to attend as this was an amazing experience I could not pass on. I am so glad I attended! I made some great connections, learned about different occupations, and I ended up finding an internship! Without the A & S Career Fair, I would not be gaining real world, practical experience at a growing business!

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite College of Arts and Science experience was being invited to give a talk at the department of communication to hundreds of students and faculty based off a speech I gave my fall semester of my freshman year. Being selected as one of the four students to participate out of thousands who were eligible made it a very special experience.

Major: English, Psychology, & Philosophy

Hometown: Manchester, Missouri

Favorite A&S Experience:
Working with creative writing holds many of my best moments here at Mizzou. Fellow students and I would hang out after class and discuss some incredibly insane hypothetical stories, all of us laughing and pondering together. Tossing up ridiculous ideas with other friends made homework seem less like "work" and more like "home." Other than that, passing out doughnuts to Marching Mizzou with Michael Urban - owner of Harold's Doughnuts - and Dean Patricia Okker stood as another incredible memory with Arts & Science. What can I say? It was pretty sweet.

Favorite A&S experience:
My favorite A & S experience was the opportunity to listen to alumni speak about their time at Mizzou. They offered great advice and were extremely relatable! It is easy to feel overwhelmed and sometimes lonely when just starting off on a new campus, but by listening to others speak about their time you realize that you are not alone. The alumni welcomed questions and offered great insight on how to grow and handle stressful times on campus!

Playing with the clarinet studio for our concert at the museum last year. It is so enjoyable to work with colleagues who want to get better and make music together, and it makes it that much better that we all have a special bond as well.

Favorite A&S Experience:
One of my favorite experiences thus far has to be the support I have received from my advisors and professors. When I began college last fall, I was undeclared with my major but quickly decided on chemistry, both of which happen to be in the College of Arts and Science. Making this transition was seamless and stress-free thanks to the help of my amazing advisors. They also encouraged me to take classes that have been some of my favorites so far. These classes have been interesting and memorable largely because of the enthusiasm from the professors. I cannot wait to see what other opportunities the College of Arts and Science brings my way!

My favorite experience in the College of Arts & Science was studying abroad in Summer 2017 through the Classics department. Twenty undergraduates, one professor, and one graduate student travelled across Greece for a month, learning ancient history, culture, and visiting a winery or two.

Hannah Sweetwood

Major: Biology

Hometown: Lake Zurich, IL

Favorite A&S Experience:
Since I have a rather complicated graduation plan, I’d have to say working with my advisor to come up with an organized layout for the future has been my favorite experience so far. In the beginning of my freshmen year, I was stressing about all the things I wanted to do and people I wanted to meet in the short 4 years of college, but having constant guidance reassured me it was all possible. One of the best parts about the College of Arts and Science is the diverse group of people it encompasses. I have met many students and faculty with different backgrounds, interests, and ideas that mesh so seamlessly. The College of Arts and Science shows how valued we are as individuals, but how strong we can be as a group.

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite experience has been in my Digital Storytelling 2880 class. My professor and peers helped me work outside of my comfort zone and connect with people throughout our community. The course is one of my favorites because of the bond I was able to build with them and the growth I was able to experience throughout the semester.

Madison Wright

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite experience in the College of Arts and Science has been in my introductory Russian classes, which have opened my eyes to grammar structures I did not even know existed and very interesting culture. In my experience—particularly in my Russian classes, but definitely in all of my College of Arts and Science classes—the faculty is always very engaging and encouraging, and truly make learning enjoyable.

Bingyue (October) Zhang

Year in school: Senior

Major: Mathematic. Minor in Biology

Hometown: Jinan, China

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite experience with A&S would be how smooth it was for me transitioning from majoring in actuarial science to math as a pre-med. Not until when I was a sophomore that I was determined to pursuing in medicine. With the help of MedOpp advisor and math advisor, I was able to transition easily and smoothly. I wouldn’t have gotten accepted by Mizzou Bryant Scholars Program, pre-addmition program of Mizzou School of Medicine, without the help of Arts and Science from every aspect.
