In my first upper-level Communications class, Argument and Advocacy with Dr. Klien, we were assigned relatively unknown people from history and got to debate with other students why our assigned person should be remembered more than the other historical figures. It was one of my favorite projects and debating with the class was really fun!

One of my fondest memories of the College of Arts & Sciences is the mythology class I took sophomore year. The class itself was extremely interesting, and I also got to know the professor well since I was working on an honors assignment with him. The College itself has brought me so many opportunities and connections, and I will forever be grateful for that.

My favorite memory in the College of Arts & Sciences is being able to connect with alumni and different professors in my department! I love that there is always a way to connect with different faculty for research opportunities on and off-campus! I’ve had several opportunities to get connected with alumni all over the world. Recently, I met a researcher in Florence, Italy that hit me with the M-I-Z! and I felt so much at home.

My favorite memory in the College of Arts and Science is from my Making Modern Europe history class: when learning about the French Revolution we were each assigned a person, like the King or a Catholic priest, and we role-played with the other characters and had a debate over what laws should be passed. It was such a fun way of learning!

I have had several amazing experiences in the College of Arts and Science. One of my favorites was going to Nashville to play at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last spring with Mini Mizzou. The fanaticism and atmosphere of a win-or-go-home tourney game has been something I have always wanted to experience. It was an incredible sight to see all the fans who had come down to support the team and to see the team fight to move on to the next round.

One of my favorite memories in the College of Arts and Science is my genetics class sophomore year. I recall entering the class terrified, thinking everything would be over my head and achieving a high grade would be near impossible. After a few exams and getting to know the instructor, I secured a better feel for the class and found myself looking forward to lecture three times per week. My professor was entertaining and I could sense his eagerness to teach and watch students learn. This inspired me to delve deeper into the subject, taking full advantage of the opportunity. This is just one of numerous instances in which I have found my education through the College of Arts and Science to be more than just a monotonous lecture. Many of my classes have been led by invested, caring professors who make the course interesting, engaging, and further my enthusiasm for learning.

Favorite A&S Experience:
Working with creative writing must hold my best memories here at Mizzou. Fellow students and I would hang out after class and discuss some of the most insane hypothetical stories, laughing together. Tossing up ridiculous ideas with other mates made homework seem less like "work" and more like "home."Other than that, passing out doughnuts to Marching Mizzou with Michael Urban - owner of Harold's Doughnuts - and Dean Patricia Okker stood as another incredible moment with the College of Arts & Science. What can I say? It was pretty sweet.

Kaitlyn Sawyer

Year in School: Junior

Major: Political Science and Economics

Hometown: Joliet, IL

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite Arts and Science experience has been reaching out to faculty members in the Political Science and Economics departments about potentially working with them as a research mentee for an undergraduate research internship. I found the process of searching for a research mentor to be enjoyable because I had the opportunity to learn about many faculty members in the Political Science and Economics departments. In particular, having conversations with professors about their research interests was an opportunity to facilitate common ground with professors that I would have previously been too intimidated to have a conversation with. As a result of this experience, I feel more comfortable in approaching professors and developing professional relationships with them. As a whole, the experience was beneficial because I was able to get to know professors that I will have in future classes, as well as developing new contacts within the Political Science and Economic departments

Favorite A&S Experience:
One of my favorite experiences thus far has to be the support I have received from my advisors and professors. When I began college last fall, I was undeclared with my major but quickly decided on chemistry, both of which happen to be in the College of Arts and Science. Making this transition was seamless and stress-free thanks to the help of my amazing advisors. They also encouraged me to take classes that have been some of my favorites so far. These classes have been interesting and memorable largely because of the enthusiasm from the professors. I cannot wait to see what other opportunities the College of Arts and Science brings my way!

Major: Biology

Hometown: Lake Zurich, IL

Favorite A & S Experience:
Since I have a rather complicated graduation plan, I’d have to say working with my advisor to come up with an organized layout for the future has been my favorite experience so far. In the beginning of my freshmen year, I was stressing about all the things I wanted to do and people I wanted to meet in the short 4 years of college, but having constant guidance reassured me it was all possible. One of the best parts about the College of Arts and Science is the diverse group of people it encompasses. I have met many students and faculty with different backgrounds, interests, and ideas that mesh so seamlessly. The College of Arts and Science shows how valued we are as individuals, but how strong we can be as a group.

Favorite A&S Experience:
My favorite College of Arts and Science experience thus far has been taking Chemistry 1330 with Dr. Justin Walensky. His relatability, engagement with his students, and evident passion for Chemistry is unmatched on Mizzou’s campus. For example, Dr. Walensky came to every lab session every week to learn each of his students’ faces and names, so that he could recognize and call you by name in lecture. Dr. Walensky always went the extra mile to ensure that I understood the subject, while also making it fun!

My favorite memory in the College of Arts & Science would be the class I took with Dr. Laura King, Intro to Personality. She was the first professor I had that that really sparked my passion in psychology. Her passion for her work radiated throughout the class and made every moment enjoyable. Throughout the course, we did various personality tests that let us learn about ourselves and others, and were a ton of fun!

My favorite experience with A&S would be how smooth it was for me transitioning from majoring in actuarial science to math as a pre-med. Not until when I was a sophomore that I was determined to pursuing in medicine. With the help of MedOpp advisor and math advisor, I was able to transition easily and smoothly. I wouldn’t have gotten accepted by Mizzou Bryant Scholars Program, pre-addmition program of Mizzou School of Medicine, without the help of Arts and Science from every aspect.
