One annual award to a doctoral student in English or American literature. The recipient shall have passed all comprehensive examinations, language requirements, etc., and thus have arrived at the beginning or be in the early stages of writing a dissertation. Preference should usually be given to those with dependents, especially several young children, since providing for a family while negotiating graduate school in a humanistic discipline is a tremendous burden. One annual award to an undergraduate in the humanities sequence who has completed two or three semesters of the four-semester sequence with an outstanding academic record. Preference may be given to those who show an inclination to become teachers.
