After earning his doctorate in geology from Stanford University in 1977, Bishop spent most of his career in Unocal, ExxonMobil and as a consultant searching the world evaluating and developing methods to evaluate oil- and gas-resource potential. More recently this has led to work recognizing a world oil supply in transition. Bishop has served the geological profession in several capacities including president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and on the Mizzou geology development board. He received the A&S Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.
