"One Size Does not Fit All: How Universal Standards for Healthy Growth Can Hide Under-nutrition and Obesity Worldwide"
Professor Daniel Hruschka, Arizona State University
In this talk, Hruschka critically examines how researchers and health organizations assess well-being, deprivation, and disease risk. Standard practice compares height and weight measures against a universal model of human growth. This approach ignores pre-existing population differences in body shape and thereby dramatically underestimates adult obesity in some countries and underestimates childhood stunting in others. Hruschka concludes by discussing current efforts to improve worldwide health and well-being assessments.
