Introduction
Opening Remarks
Cooper Drury, Dean, College of Arts & Science
Art, in all its forms, enhances all our lives. It reflects both the beauty and ugliness of the human condition and helps us experience the world in new ways. Art teaches us how to dream — how to imagine creating something yet to exist.
Cooper Drury
Act I
School of Music
Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
Conducted by Stephen Rogers Radcliffe
Sinquefield Composition Prize
Presented to morima by Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield
There are stories of childhood that are meant to be kept private, yet the toy piano as an instrument tells these stories through its innocence.
“TREATMELIKEADOG” begins the work by introducing two characters: family dogs by the names Rex and Luna. their personalities are playfully posed against each other. an awkward, dopey waltz, based on the whistling call for our dogs, is rudely interrupted by an energetic military march for Luna. the two themes collide for one final part titled “WAR!” depicting the chaotic playtime for the two dogs.
After a dramatic cadence, this movement collapses into the reality of the next movement: “i have learned something i shouldn’t have.” in this movement, i offer consolation for the children of first-generation japanese-american immigrants. a consolation that is shared privately, and one i wish i heard from someone else.
