presented by "We Always Swing" Jazz Series

The Jazz Series commissioned National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Bob Brookmeyer to compose a new work for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (VJO). Brookmeyer will conduct the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and present the world premiere of his new piece, part of an evening concert on February 18, 2009, that also will include some of his earlier works along with a variety of other selections.
In addition, the Jazz Series invited Dan Morgenstern - a 2007 NEA Jazz Master designate, Director of the Jazz Institute at Rutgers University and one of the world’s most respected jazz historians - to serve as guest host and emcee of the proceedings. The day before the world premiere and concert, we have asked him to moderate a pair of intriguing forums. First, Morgenstern will conduct a one-on-one interview with Brookmeyer as the two men discuss the composer’s lifetime of contribution to jazz; a second forum will offer an historical perspective of the VJO’s continuum from 1965 to the present.
Both forums, also part of Arts & Science Week, will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, and will be free and open to the public.
