“My Mizzou” Stories

David RobertsonDavid Robertson

Two scientists at the University of Missouri are working together to create a solution to large, ineffective nuclear batteries. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are devices made primarily out of silicon that are very small and are used every day in a wide variety of ways — in an inkjet printer, to gauge tire pressure and airbag deployment, and rollover control. There is a huge potential for MEMS uses in the future for the military and medical fields. A problem occurs when trying to power these tiny MEMS — a large, clunky battery counteracts the benefit of the small machine. That is where Jae Wan Kwon, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and J. David Robertson, professor of chemistry and associate director of the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center (MURR) come in — they are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter, and more efficient than previous batteries.

In addition, they have accomplished what no other research group in the world has done – four papers recognized as best of the year in three years in the same journal.
