Student Information for Faculty

Professional advisors of the College of Arts and Science are located both in 107 Lowry and on the mezzanine level of the Student Success Center.

In a nutshell, the staff in the Student Success Center are part of the Academic Exploration and Advising Services of the Student Success Center and of the College of Arts and Science; their primary function is to work with students who are deciding on a major and/or are in transition. Colleagues in 107 Lowry are part of Advising Support Services of the College of Arts and Science and have as their primary focus helping department faculty and staff members in the advising they do of declared majors. As time progresses, we expect to work with the 107 Lowry staff so that they become instrumental in such important educational opportunities as study abroad, internships, and other experiences that add to the quality of an undergraduate degree.

Our present plans call for 107 Lowry to be the focal point for any appeals that have to be considered by the Arts and Science Academic Appeals Committee.

MU Career Center is located on the lower level of the Student Success Center.

The MU Career Center's primary function is to assist students with career exploration and job search. The staff is happy to provide faculty with presentations and workshops for the classroom or for student organization meetings. Career topics include resume writing, interviewing skills, job search strategies, graduate school preparation, and much more. Career Center staff also offer Arts and Science faculty and staff career resources to use in their courses and advising (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, downloadable guides and handouts, and recommended employment job search engines). The staff would like to collaborate with A&S departments as much as possible to develop students’ professional skills and to help them succeed as they pursue their post-graduation plans.

If you are interested in career workshops or other collaborations with the MU Career Center, please contact the Career Center.

Academic Calendar

Early Alert Form

The Early Alert Form is used to report serious concerns about the classroom behavior or progress of a student. (Do not use this form to report only absences. For excessive absences, please use the green Special Absence Report card referred to below.)

Early Alert Online Form >>

Special Absence Report

The Special Absence Report card is used to report excessive absences of a student. These cards are available from the registration office, 130 Jesse Hall, 882-7881. Any absence policy you set for your classes should be clearly outlined on the syllabus you distribute to the class. You also much adhere to that policy (i.e., if you tell students they will be dropped for excessive absences, you need to follow through when such absences occur).

Unless you initiate the request that a student be dropped from a course for non-attendance, it will not happen. Requests to have students dropped for non-attendance should be sent to Ted Tarkow, Associate Dean, Arts and Science, 317 Lowry Hall. Historically, we have allowed students to be dropped for non-attendance up until the last date for withdrawal from a single course (November 6); isolated exceptions have been approved for truly unusual circumstances.

Graduation Plan

The College of Arts and Science requires students to declare a major no later than the semester after they have completed 55 hours toward a degree. For your information,we use a general form for this purpose is (some departments have their own special form, but it is modeled on this general one).

We strongly urge students be advised to start the process of completing a Graduation Plan with the departmental director of undergraduate studies and/or with other faculty in the department who help with this responsibility. Students who are unable to declare a major by the time they have completed 55 hours should visit with an advisor in 107 Lowry in order to discuss options.

Degree Requirements, AB and BS Degrees

These are the degrees most frequently awarded by this division. If you want copies of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or Bachelor of General Studies, let us know.

"Person to Call"

Our staff has prepared a roster of personnel in the Dean's Office who may be contacted on particular matters. Contact any advisor.

Questions about Advising

Should you have any questions about student matters, please don't hesitate to contact Ted Tarkow or Ruth Wright, Director of Advising, College of Arts and Science. Alternatively, any of our professional advisors listed below would be more than happy to be of assistance to you.

University of Missouri Rules and Regulations

The M-Book Online, Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri-Columbia has many sections of interest to faculty as well as students including important information on the following topics.

Academic Calendar
Academic Discipline
Academic Rules and Regulations
Course Repeat Policy
Grade Change Appeal

Much of this information can also be found in the Undergraduate Catalog and each semester's Course Offerings (formerly Schedule of Courses).

Odds and Ends

Consistent with action by the Arts and Science Curriculum, Instruction, and Advising Committee, effective with the fall 2001 semester A&S students are not limited to a maximum of two non-A&S courses in a single semester.

Effective with the fall 2000 semester, selected non-A&S courses can be used for lower-division general education A&S requirements.

Effective fall 2000, students "on probation" are not required to get a dean's stamp in order to register; nor are they restricted from using either telephone or StarMU registration Your letter of dismissal outlines options you have should you wish to seek readmission to this division. I join my colleagues on the committee in expressing the hope that this will be possible.

University Registrar Brenda Selman has been urging all divisions to remind their faculty that a student is limited to a maximum of one calendar year within which to complete any coursework for a class for which he or she initially received an "incomplete" grade.

The University registrar is urging all divisions to remind faculty and staff that FERPA rules and regulations (the Buckley Amendment) significantly restricts information that can be released or made public without a student's written authorization. Please bear this in mind as you consider how to post grades on quizzes, exams, and semester reports.

Other offices in the Student Success Center are affiliated with the Career Center, Academic Retention Services, and the Learning Center. These offices provide important assistance for students as they consider career options, request tutorial assistance, and handle other challenges that might affect their success at MU.

We hope you find this information beneficial to you as your begin the semester. Please don't hesitate to call our office if you have questions.

Best wishes.
Ted Tarkow
