- Physics Professor Peter Pfeifer is investigating a way to reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Pfeifer and researchers from the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City have developed the technology to safely and efficiently store natural gas as fuel for vehicles. The low-pressure storage units, filled with charred briquettes made of corn, are being tested on a pickup truck owned by the Kansas City Office of Environmental Quality. [more]
- The nation’s top university literary journal, The Missouri Review, has been publishing “found texts” for more than 30 years. Among those previously unpublished literary gems are portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls and a play by Mark Twain, Colonel Sellers. By working as interns for The Review, MU students prepare for careers in publishing. [more]
- The finest mathematicians solve the world’s most difficult conjectures. MU’s Department of Mathematics has 10 professors whose calculations resulted in analytical proofs.
- A mathematics department Web site is one of the nation’s most popular math-testing sites, according to Google and Yahoo searches. Developed to help prospective MU students prepare for placement tests, MathOnline ranks near the top worldwide – of nearly 20 million sites – for students preparing for SAT and ACT tests. [more]
- The School of Music has developed a reputation as a nurturing environment for the creation of new music. Thomas McKenney, professor of composition and theory, has mentored four winners of the Music Teachers National Association annual competition for student composer of the year.
- Students in the English Department’s Creative Writing Program are recent winners of many of the nation’s leading book awards, including two National Poetry Series Book Awards, the Iowa Poetry Prize, the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Del Sol Press Book Award, the John Simmons Short Fiction Award and the Ohio State University Short Fiction Prize.
- Graduates of the Department of Communication had the highest overall satisfaction rate of any communication doctoral program in the nation, according to a recent study by the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students.
- One of the world’s foremost researchers of chemical pollutants is an MU professor of biological sciences. Fred vom Saal’s work makes headlines internationally as he alerts the public to the dangers of bisphenol A, a prevalent chemical in plastic products. An inaugural award from the Upstream Fund honors this distinguished researcher for his commitment to scientific integrity and the pursuit of science in the public interest.
- A political science student, Nicholas Dudley, is only the second debater in the history of the National Forensics Association to win two consecutive national championships. [more]
- The Museum of Anthropology is the only anthropology museum in Missouri and one of the few in the Midwest.
